An amazing place

A UNESCO-declared Biosphere Reserve, home to three volcanoes and a lake that covers the crater of another volcano. The Santa Ana Volcano is thousands of years old and currently there is fumarolic activity and a turquoise sulfur lake in its crater. Its highest point is 2,300 meters above sea level, making it the highest volcano in El Salvador. Cerro Verde is an extinct volcano with a cloud forest around its crater. The third volcano, Izalco, is an active volcano and one of the youngest volcanoes in the western hemisphere. Lake Coatepeque lies next to the three volcanoes, and has been named one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. In addition, the volcanic soil and altitude create a perfect combination for world-class coffee.

An Interesting Story

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, ships sailing along the Salvadoran coast were guided by the glow of the lava expelled by the Izalco Volcano. During this period, the eruptions of lava from Izalco were constant. It is for this reason that the volcano was known as the Lighthouse of the Pacific.

When can I visit the Park?

Los Volcanes National Park can be visited all year round. The rainy season in El Salvador is from May to October. This season offers a more intense green and in the afternoons is common mist that gives a mystical atmosphere to the place. In May, the coffee flower blooms, a wonderful spectacle where it seems that snow has fallen on the green leaves. During the dry season from November to April, it is more likely to enjoy clear blue skies and occasional strong winds. November, December and January are popular months for climbing the volcanoes.
